Overview:
Melanotan I (MT-1), also known as afamelanotide, is a synthetic analog of α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone with higher selectivity for the MC1 receptor,
which primarily regulates skin pigmentation.
Mechanism of Action:
- Selective agonist at melanocortin-1 receptor (MC1R)
- Stimulates eumelanin production
- Enhances photoprotective pigmentation response
Research & Clinical Context:
- Studied for photoprotection in individuals with photosensitivity disorders
- Investigated for erythropoietic protoporphyria (EPP)
- Explored in pigmentation and dermatology research
Regulatory Status:
Afamelanotide (brand name Scenesse) has received regulatory approval in
certain regions (e.g., European Medicines Agency and FDA) for the treatment of
erythropoietic protoporphyria under strict medical supervision. Research-use
versions are not equivalent to approved pharmaceutical formulations.
